In academia, censorship and conformity have become the norm – Debra Soh

In academia, censorship and conformity have become the norm – Globe and Mail online.

A new academic journal, titled The Journal of Controversial Ideas, launching in the new year, will be peer-reviewed and offer a diverse range of viewpoints, calling upon liberals, conservatives, as well as those who are religious and secular, to submit their work. Most notably, it will allow academics to publish under pseudonyms.

Much of the response to this journal has been criticism alleging that only academics with hateful ideas would require the option to publish under a pseudonym. In truth, facts today are deemed controversial if they deviate from accepted narratives, and professors must self-censor out of fear of being condemned and losing their jobs.

Thomas Sowell Returns

Thomas Sowell Returns. – Reason Magazine

One of America’s top social scientists on what has changed since he sat down with Reason 38 years ago.

Thirty-eight years ago, Reason contributor Thomas Hazlett and Senior Editor Manny Klausner sat down with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) economist and social scientist Thomas Sowell for a sprawling interview about race, gender, poverty, economics, and what he viewed as the government’s many failed and misguided attempts to lift up poor minorities. Sowell talked about his history as a Marxist, his frustrations with working in government, and why he rejects the label “libertarian,” preferring instead to describe himself as “a person who dissents from the current liberal orthodoxy.”

The Journal of Controversial Ideas – Dylan Matthews

The Journal of Controversial Ideas is already, well, controversial. Here’s a founder’s defense.

Francesca Minerva explains how death threats for an article about abortion led to the journal’s creation.

News broke last week that philosophers Jeff McMahan, Peter Singer, and Francesca Minerva are planning to start a publication called the Journal of Controversial Ideas, an interdisciplinary academic outlet where scholars will be allowed to present arguments and findings pseudonymously, without fear of damaging their reputation.

Quillette Spotlight – Libby Emmons

Writing for Quillette Ended My Theater Project

It was suggested that I apologize and that an apology might help. This wasn’t an assurance, but an idea—if I walked back what I had written, there might be a way forward. I looked around the table at these four women who knew me too well to believe that I would apologize for something I had written. Before each of us sat the full-length script on which we’d spent several months collaborating. I’d formed this theater collective precisely to make a play based on a killer idea I’d had, and I’d asked each of these talented, thoughtful, intelligent, creative women to work with me.
